2013 Summary

Summary

2013, was a slow slow year and was not very productive recording-wise, a lot of lessons learned, upgrading of recording gear, and some big changes in life meant to no new BBBlood releases in 2013. In some ways it was the best and worst of times. But the year is almost over now...

Next releases

Recordings of material for a few releases including a c30 on Beartown Records and finally the 2xC30 split tape with Duncan Harrison should be out early 2014. More news on that when I have updates.

Live

Performing live, I've probably played some of the most memorable shows to date including really enjoyable sets in Leeds, Brighton and in London. The Crater Lake all day event stands out as my favourite of the bunch, a live recording was released on Sound Holes that can be downloaded and soon to be released on mini CDr.

IIPA

I also started and finished a new project IIPA which played it's one and only show this year and released a 20 odd minute CDr 'street drinking' this can still be downloaded on the BBBlood bandcamp page.

Drain Bramaged

That happened

End of year favourite records / gigs

I'm going to try keep it short and sweet but there has been some amazing new releases this year, quite a few I'm probably going to forget (and probably add on later). Also this year has been great for a lot of my friends who have either put out or recorded some exceptional records. No nepotism here but honestly amazing records (OK maybe just a little but still no less worthy).

  • Joesph Hammer - Albany/Philadelphia (Dungeon Taxis)
  • Heatsick - Re-Engineering (PAN) (Also the Snakes & Ladders ep)
  • Wanda Group - Outer Alsatian (Notown)
  • Lettera 22 - Physical Point (Holiday Records)

  • Crater Lake all day event in Leeds
  • Pieces - Self titled (White Centipede Noise)
  • Spoils & Relics (live)
  • Morphosis - Dismantle / Music For Vampyr (Honest Jon's) (Possibly played at the wrong speed)
  • Playing with my friends Aqua Dentata & These Feathers Have Plumes
  • The Homosexuals - Live on The HMS President

SOME REVIEWS AND NEWS

Quick updates...

Thanks to Dan, for putting me (us) on in Leeds last month. As always it was a hoot!

Some words/sounds/thoughts can be found on Idwal Fisher, Radio Free Midwich, and Sheepscar Light Industrial.

If you don't follow any of these blogs, then you should really consider doing so.

Again it was great to see loads of happy faces. Hopefully there will be another Leeds trip planned soon.

The IIPA CDr is gone, download it for free in the previous post. Thanks for those who came to this show and joined for the very drunken DJ Drain Bramaged set afterwards.

Next show announcement very soon, stay tuned.

IIPA

So Saturday the 29th June was the first (and quite possibly the only) IIPA performance. I played at the Unicorn just north of Camden Town quite near to where I live in Holloway, a pub I've been to once before in the past for a gig, and subsequently left before any of the bands had even started. Good vibes. However it's improved a lot since I last went there.

The theme behind the project "IIPA" is street drinking. If you've not heard of a IIPA before it stands for Imperial India Pale Ale and is a style of beer.

"Double IPAs (also referred to as Imperial IPAs) are a stronger, very hoppy variant of IPAs that typically have alcohol content above 7.5% by volume.[22] The style is claimed to have originated with Vinnie Cilurzo, currently the owner of Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa CA" (Wikipedia).

So if you know anything about drinking anything above 7.5% abv is pretty heavy. Heavy drinking, heavy noise both seem to go hand in hand within the music (See Incapacitants - Alcoholic Speculation). So that's why I decided to do this one-off project as tribute to the combination of street drinking and noise.

The performance I played probably just over ten minutes sat at a table enjoying a bottle of exceptional IIPA (Double Eye PA) by Mikkeller which clocks in at a reasonably heavy 14% abv. It's a strong one. Especially as it was warming up in my bag whilst setting up and watching the other bands. Minimal non-visible setup, focus on the drinking aspect, and loud noise.

In conjunction of this performance there was a limited edition of 24 copies CDr 'streetdrinking' given away for free. All copies are now taken, I won't be reissuing this CDr at any point. But you can download / stream the tracks for free on BandCamp.

Thanks to Rick and Oli for putting me on.

2013 REVIEWS & LIVE DATES

An excellent review of the N 51°33' 0'' / W 0°7' 0'' ep that came out last year on Sheepscar light industrial by former zine now top review blog Idwal Fisher.

BBBlood - N 51°33' 0'' / W 0°7' 0''
Sheepscar Light Industrial. 3”CDR. SLI 010. 50 Copies.

"Meanwhile, back at the Barons cage we have Paul Watson keeping the capital alive with his highly rewarding noise constructs. Its a pity there hasn’t been more of BBBlood through these gates for what I hear impresses me - this isn’t all head down, thumbs through belt loops, shoulder swinging, hair swaying drongo noise y’know, there’s a great deal of thought goes into what he does and it shows. During ‘Marseille’ I’m treated to the sound of an oak tree being snapped in half, the splinters ripping across my skull in all its panned glory. I’m sure there’s field recordings in there too, especially on the first track ‘Obscurantism’ which sounds as if it was recorded on the buffet car of the London to Leeds East Coast express. An all out blast appears in due course and when it arrives you know about it but its the way in which Watson arranges his sound that impresses me most. He’s an erudite chap and his compositions show and yes I did mean compositions. The way in which these two tracks are structured, the way in which various elements appear and disappear, the continuous flow of ideas and sounds all point towards a daring and highly enthusiastic mind. I dare say that the Baron has laid his offerings at the TNB alter too for there is the scrape and a rusty bike wheel being slowly spun, its rotations coming to an end with an ear squealing orgasm. Factory hum, that glorious wood tearing .. I believe we may have some kind of mini classic on our hands here. To the downloads."

Thank you for the review! Also check out the Sheepscar Light Industrial website as the recent batch was pretty exceptional.

You can read the full review here

I have 2 copies of this left so email me if you want one.

Also  the split c30 with Half an Abortion made it into the 'top-ten of 2012' on Radio Free Midwich
plus I received a couple other mentions in the list. Thanks!

Next show I return to Leeds in March to play the Crater Lake All Day event.

2012 ROUND UP

2012 wasn't the best year, but it wasn't the worst year either, I'm kind of glad to see 2013 arrive.

One of the biggest challenges of 2012 was not having any recording equipment for almost half the year and trying to find ways to record / transfer from tape to digital without a fully functional computer. Scrapping plans on the first BBBlood lp (if anyone is interested...) and a couple other release wasn't what I planned either. However there were some real highlights to take away from the year.

Personal highlights :

  • Playing in Nottingham, Bristol, Leeds, and a couple shows in London
  • Sharing a couple of these line-ups with friends Aqua Dentata, These Feathers Have Plumes, and Cheapmachines
  • Managing to record three decent eps over the space of the year (split w/ Tinnitustimulus, split w/ Half An Abortion, and the 3" CDr on Sheep Scar)

Highlights / records of 2012 (for what it's worth):

  • Aaron Dilloway - Modern Jester (Hanson)
  • Rammel Club weekender, Nottingham
  • Daniel Menche live @ West Germany, Berlin
  • Broken Flag weekend, London (and meeting loads of great people)
  • Small Cruel Party - An Accident In Substance (Harbinger Sound - Reissue)
  • Francisco Meirino - Untitled Phenomenas in Concrete (Cave12)
  • The New Blockaders / Vagina Dentata Organ live @ NK, Berlin (+ the VDO picture disc issued later in the year on Harbinger Sound)
  • Schimpfluch Carnival, Bristol (Both for the social event and musically)
  • Basic House ‎– Cryptid Binaries (Washy Tapes)
  • Lee Gamble ‎– Diversions 1994-1996 (PAN)
  • Wanda Group ‎– Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight (Opal Tapes)
  • Reverse Baptism - Street Business (Anabolic Dimension)
  • Marc Hurtado and Vomir - 2012 (Tourette)
  • Lettera 22 ‎– Native Waters (Second Sleep)
  • John Macedo ‎– Silt (Beartown Records)
  • Arv and Miljö ‎– Orientering I Denna Värld (Ljud & Bild Produktion)
  • The Tobacconists - Smoking Is Green (Economy Of Language)
  • Jason Lescalleet - Songs About Nothing (Erstwhile Records)
  • Robert Turman ‎– Flux (Spectrum Spools - Reissue)
  • Yeast Culture ‎– IYS (Art-Into-Life - Reissue)
  • Liars ‎– WIXIW (Mute)
  • Jason Crumer - Let There Be Crumer (Second Layer Records)
  • Hype Williams - London 2012
  • Holly Herndon - Movement (Rvng Intl.)
  • Heatsick live and on record
  • Astor - Alcor (Kye)
  • Various Artists - Truth was invented by liars (Dotsmark)
  • Jean Tinguely - Sound Sculptures at the Tate (Edition Bierammer)
  • Ssaliva - RZA (Vlek)
  • Aqua Dentata - Stone Garden Borders (Feral Tapes)
  • Duncan Harrison - Young Arms (Chocolate Monk)
A pretty long list

Next up, I'm currently recording a new cassette for Beartown Records and a track for the second split tape with Duncan Harrison. Both are taking a long time with many false starts. Hopefully both will surface soon.
